Avignon

Nicknamed the City of Popes due to the presence of popes from 1309 to 1423, it is currently the capital of the Vaucluse department. Avignon is one of the few French cities to have preserved its ramparts and historic center. For this reason, it has been classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Opposite the hotel stands the Palais des Papes: the largest Gothic palace in the world. It features 25 visitor areas with priceless decorations and frescoes, open all year round:

  • The Saint Bénezet Bridge, better known as the Pont d'Avignon, is a major witness to the history of Avignon.
  • Notre Dame des Doms is the cathedral located next to the Palais des Papes; it is topped by a gilded lead statue of the Virgin Mary.
  • The Jardin des Doms, a natural refuge, is a place to stroll with magnificent views of old Avignon, the Rhône, and the countryside stretching as far as Mont Ventoux.
